Working with the processes, forms, and materials of a place (its nature) for infrastructure purposes.

Our five-year project is advancing research and development into new forms of natural infrastructure for bays and estuaries on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States.

Through studies sited in select bays and estuaries on the Atlantic and Gulf coasts, the NIIP will produce:

+ Place-specific natural infrastructure design concepts
+ Studies of how those design concepts function according to key criteria
+ Documented procedures for devising innovative forms of natural infrastructure

The NIIP is led by a team of landscape architects who, alongside engineers, scientists, and other experts, have been supporting EWN’s efforts to increase innovation in natural infrastructure design since 2017.
